Evaluation Question 6 What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Whilst filming our thriller we learned to use a variety of new equipment, we used both software and hardware. From using these new pieces of equipment, we were able to gain new skills to use to be able to make our thriller.

Hardware

Some of the new hardware that we used for our thriller consisted of a Digital camcorder with which we filmed our thriller. We learned to use a tripod to help us with the filming. With both of these together we were able to film whilst keeping the camera steady as well as being able to use some relatively imaginative shots to help our thriller look more professional. To add on to the camera and the tripod we also learned how to use a clip on microphone and also a boom microphone, we used this equipment in order for our sound quality to become greater rather than using the microphone inside of the camera. Furthermore, we also learned how to use a mac so we could edit our thriller film effectively. Whilst our filming we also learned how to use incredibly effective camera shots in our film to give off different feelings to our film.

Software

Moreover, on the macs we had to use certain software that was available on the macs, for example we used Final Cut Express as a means to edit our film and so that we were able to choose the best shots that would of made our film look most effective as a Thriller. We also used the software of LiveType where we were able to create our own movie ident that was needed to put into our thriller, we also used the effects that were originally put into LiveType. Whilst using these forms of software we was also able to put our film together after filming.

Internet Websites

We also used some internet sites for help on our thriller, for example we had to try to get some fonts from somewhere for our Thriller, so we decided to go to Dafont in order to find a font that we could use for the title of our film. We also had to find certain music that would sound ominous for our thriller for us to be able to set the scene and make our film seem like a thriller film. We also used the website Youtube in order for us to find examples that we could use for our blogs of things like actual thriller openings from actual movies and examples of past student thriller films, we also used Youtube as a means to find some sound effects that we could use in our thriller to find a like loud jumpscare noise . Furthermore, on the fact of blogs we also used the Website Blogger so we could actually keep track of all the build up to our film, for example to be able to show what was actually happening before we filmed like for example, all of our previous films which consisted of us trying to film correctly, to be able to use sound properly and also to be able to edit the films correctly.

What have you learned and what skills have you gained?

Throughout the time that we was filming, we learned a variety of new skills that we could use whilst filming. We learned how to use a camera with a tripod and a boom microphone correctly in order to film effectively and to be able to get sound correctly and at a decent quality as well. We also learned how to edit a film correctly, being able to add in text for example over the image, we also learned to be able introduce edits with different camera cuts to make our film look effective. We also learned how to use the internet to find new styles of font and music that could be used in our thriller. We learned how to use websites such as blogger effectively and to be able to record information corecty on it. We learned to use macs effectively in order for us to be able to use them to edit our films to a good quality and was also through Final Cut Express was able to modify some of the sounds which was in our thriller in order for them to become more quieter or louder if it needed to be.

Audience Research and Feedback Focus Group.

Audience Research

We chose a small number of people to watch our Thriller and our Rough cut and then wanted them to tell us what they thought of it in the end. First of all we needed to do some research by showing people our rough cut. Overall they enjoyed it, obviously, we needed some desperate changes to it due to the fact of it being the rough cut, They picked up on the ideas that were wrong in the thriller, for example the way that it was laid out it enabled us to change the thriller for better.

Audience Feedback

Overall, they enjoyed the actual thriller overall, they enjoyed the idea of the unsettling music, they also thought that the idea of the argument at the beginning was brilliant, since it helps you feel sorry  and makes you care for the person who ends up getting kidnapped. They also praised the idea of the acting in the thriller, they said that the people in the Thriller acted incredibly well.

Finding Sound and music

Almost every film has some sort of music in it, our film is no different, we had to find some music and sound effects for our film. To find this music we had to download some non copyrighted music that could be put into our film.

This is how we did it.

First of all we went to the website http://www.freesfx.co.uk/sfx/
We then just from this searched through the music and found the mysterious music that we was looking for in order for our thriller to try and look relatively more like an actual film with the music in it. This was needed in our Thriller because we needed some music in it in order for it to be able to set the mood of the film and to keep the audience from being bored because otherwise, if there actually was no form of music that could of been used in the film, it would of been incredibly boring snd just basically talking with the odd sounds of footsteps here an there.

Finding a font

For our Thriller I felt that we needed a decent font for our movie title and our credits for the film, I searched all around on the mac, however could not find a font that I wanted to use for our film, so I chose to download a font for our thriller, we eventually found and downloaded a font.

First of all I had to go to the website www.dafont.com/

However I already had the idea of the font that I wanted to use, It was called 'Prowler', so i searched it up on dafont,
found it and then downloaded it.

Past Student Analysis

Past student Analysis

Before my group will make our film together we will first start off with watching some past student's films and then comment on them, what we like about them, what we dislike and what we think could have been done better. We have to do this so then we could possibly use some of their techniques that they used, and then maybe try to incorporate them into our film.

Finders Keepers

In my opinion this example of a student Thriller is an excellent one, straight from the beginning of the film we can see some key thriller conventions, first of all starting with the fact that the macguffin of the story has been seen straight away. The use of music in this thriller has been used almost perfectly, it has been used to build up the tension needed at the start of the film and then also when the chase starts, the music changes into a piece of music with a faster tempo, therefore making it seem like that everything has picked up in pace. The location of the filming is excellent as well, they went up to London so they could have the space to run about and film in great detail. I think that there is barely anything to note that I disliked about the film, I thought that the camera shots were steady, the music was incredibly suited well to the film. However one thing I would try to change the ending because it ends up being too dark.

The Routine

Another Student Thriller that i watched was called 'The Routine'. I thought that this one was yet another good type of Thriller. However I also thought that it would end up being quite predictable, it has a few re runs of the protagonist's daily routine from when he wakes up but one day the routine of his day are slightly ruined, things kept changing and it was pretty obvious that the antagonist was the person who changed the routine. The use of music throughout this piece of work was done incredibly well.

Waking up

Here is another Past student thriller that I watched and enjoyed, it is called waking up and consists of very decent aspects that make the thriller a decent opening, it contains aspects such as compelling music, accompanied with decent acting. The premise of the opening is good as a thriller ,as it leads us into the overall story of the thriller quite fast, then ends when the thriller is getting interesting, just for it to grab our attention for long enough to want to watch it.

Skyward Studios (Ident)

Ident

All filming companies need an Ident for their films, here is ours. Skyward Studios. We chose this one because we wanted to do something that is to do with the sky so we chose a background with the mixture of sky blue and white, like the sky and the clouds. We chose the font to be in black so then it will be clear and take over most of the screen. We chose that type of font because we thought that it would go well with the background, the colour black was probably the best colour to use for it as it was the colour that came out the clearest.

Studio Ident analysis

Studio Idents

All big time studios have their own ident at the beginning of their films, they are used to help the audience know who helped to make their movies. Some big studios that could be named could be that of are studios like Paramount, Universal and 20th Century Fox.

Paramount

This is Paramount's studio ident, it contains its own font, to accompany it is the mountains. This is an Ident that loads of people know already due to the films that they have made. They seem to be quite a huge studio hence why their studio ident id well known, they helped to make films such as the Indiana Jones series.

Universal

This is the Universal Studio Ident, it contains the world with Universal written over it, this works well as it is the idea of the universe with the image of the world. Again this is a huge movie company as it has helped out do some films such as that of the Fast and Furious series.

20th Century Fox

Here is the 20th century Fox studio ident, it contains the writing of 20th century Fox surrounded by loads of spotlights. The writing is in a bright colour, so therefore it is eye catching so it works quite well. The Colour of the sky in the background helps us to see the brighter colours more easily. Some films that they have done are such as the Simpsons movie for example.

Title Analysis

Here is the opening sequence to the thriller film Skyfall. It works incredibly well as a thriller opening for a number of reasons, ranging from the use of music that is attached to it to the way that the text appears on screen at certain times. The fact that they decided to use music from a well known singer is also a way to try to attempt to make the title seem better than it is. The constant use of red and blue work together well in this opening. The text of the title also makes use of the title well, since the text mostly appears in the middle of the screen it is the main focus point of the opening from the parts that text is actually on screen.

Rough Sketch/Explanation of location and key points to note
We will be filming in two three different locations, starting off with the drama studio in All Saints School, then we will be using one of our houses and then finally we will be going out into the streets to film the final scenes.

Access to location via:
Drama Studio All Saints School.

Name and number of location contact:
Drama Teacher.

Health and Safety Issues to note:
There is the problem of filming out in the streets and the obstacles of cars coming down the street when we will be trying to film the Thriller.

Potential Filming Problems:

If we have the problem of not being able to gain access of the All Saints drama studio but however if this is the case we do have the backup of filming in a shed at the back of one of our houses.
Another problem to us could be the weather, we would have to keep the camera dry so therefore if it was to rain, and then we would have to use something to keep the Camera Dry. We could possibly do something like just put an umbrella over the Camera.

Additional Notes:  (map of area/weather forecast etc)
Here is a map of the Area that we will be filming at, on the A is where we will be filming most of the Thriller and then also on this map you can see All Saints School where we will hopefully be able to film the other part of the Thriller.

Title: Difference

Tag Line: It’s not always the same…

Synopsis:  Victim wakes up in a dark room, tries to look around, and however cannot see anything. Kidnapper then says lines like “Isn’t it strange how roles can be reversed…”. Then the next shot that we will see is that a shot saying 12 hours earlier, the victim has an argument with a couple of his friends and/or family and leaves the house to try and calm down but ends up getting kidnapped after getting knocked out by the villain. The screen goes to black and the title of the film comes up. The villain kidnaps him because she wants a role reversal, instead of a man kidnapping a helpless girl, a woman would kidnap a helpless man.

Key Genre Conventions:
Tension.
